Background

As one of the largest independent IT consultancies in the UK, CCL has amassed extensive expertise on many aspects of Information Technology. This knowledge has been used by a number of lawyers in IT litigation cases where CCL has supplied IT Expert Witnesses (having been involved in over 150 cases since 1988).

As an extension of this service and in response to client demand, in 2001 CCL developed a fully secure, Home Office approved, computer laboratory for IT Forensic and evidential analysis. This facility was launched as a separate company in 2004 - CCL-Forensics Ltd www.ccl-forensics.com.

Why is it needed?

Digital Forensics is the application of computer investigation and analysis techniques in the interests of determining potential legal evidence. This evidence may include, but is not limited to, such things as deleted emails or files, computer logs, indecent images, or spreadsheets and accounting information.

Similarly Mobile Phone and PDA technology can also be analysed and evidence recovered from call registers, dialled numbers, stored or deleted images and videos and text messages.

Given the pervasiveness of computers in modern life, it is hardly surprising that a connection exists between crime and computers. As the use of the personal computers has exploded, so has the number of people willing to exploit commercial computer-use to commit crimes and civil wrongs. Almost any type of investigation and litigation today may rely on evidence obtained from computer systems.

Digital evidence from computer forensic analysis can prove to be a deciding factor in a legal case. It may be used to show that a crime has been committed, identify suspects, defend innocent parties, or help understand the motives and intent of individuals.
